Will My Spider Veins Come Back?

Though spider veins are often considered a cosmetic issue, they can sometimes cause pain or discomfort. For this reason, many people decide to have them removed using a minimally invasive medical procedure called sclerotherapy.

How does sclerotherapy work?

Sclerotherapy, or more specifically surface sclerotherapy, is an outpatient procedure that’s performed by injecting a special FDA-approved sclerosing solution directly into the vein. This solution is much more effective—and far less painful—than the typical salt solution. Surface sclerotherapy focuses on veins that are near the surface of the skin and most noticeable.

Benefits of sclerotherapy treatment

Sclerotherapy is highly effective in reducing or eliminating unsightly varicose veins, reticular veins and spider veins. Here are the additional benefits of sclerotherapy treatment:

  1. Minimally invasive
  2. Short procedure
  3. No hospitalization required
  4. No anesthesia required
  5. Fast recovery time
  6. Minimal pain
  7. No scarring
  8. Safe and effective for all ages
  9. Relieves aches and pains associated with affected veins

Is sclerotherapy permanent?

Yes, it is a permanent solution to the spider vein and/or varicose veins that are specifically treated. However, sclerotherapy cannot prevent different or new spider or varicose veins from appearing. Before beginning any vein care treatment, it’s important to get evaluated by a vein care specialist to be sure underlying veins are treated along with the spider veins. If the underlying cause isn’t treated, more spider veins may develop shortly following treatment as a result of unresolved pressure issues in the affected veins.

Most patients with spider veins (or varicose veins) are genetically predisposed to the condition and will continue to experience different veins with problems over time. In some cases, these new vein problems may appear shortly after treatment. For people in this situation, they can return for “touch up” treatments to keep their vein issues under control.
